Here you find the answers of the freuquently asked questions about acid-base-balance and Basica®.For how long can I take Basica® products? With unimpaired kidney function, Basica® products can be taken for an unlimited period of time without reservations for harmonization of the acid-base balance. If excessive quantities of minerals or trace elements are ingested, these will be excreted again without problems if the kidney function is normal. Since the functioning of the kidneys declines with increasing age, however, elderly persons should go to their doctor to have this checked at regular intervals. Can I also take the Basica® products if I cannot tolerate milk sugar?Due to a shortage of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down lactose in the intestine and thereby makes it digestible, diarrhea and indigestion occur after the intake of large quantities of milk sugar. Basica® Vital is therefore not recommended for patients with lactose intolerance. All other Basica® products are lactose free and can be taken in case of lactose intolerance. Are the Basica® products also suitable for diabetics?Diabetics have to be careful on taking carbohydrates. Basica® Vital (2 CU per daily dose), Basica® Instant (0.8 CU per daily dose) und Basica® Sport (4 CU per daily dose) are therefore not suitable for diabetics. All other Basica® products can be taken in from diabetics. Can the Basica® products also be taken during pregnancy and the nursing period?During pregnancy and the lactation period, the need for minerals and trace elements is clearly increased. The Basica® products can also be taken in the recommended dosage during pregnancy and the lactation period for supporting the acid-base balance. Are Basica® products also suitable for children? The Basica® products are also suitable for children of 4 years or older. For children under 12 the daily dose is recommended: 0.2 g Basica® Vital or 0.15 g Basica® Instant per kg body weight or 1-2 tablets Basica® Compact. Basica Heiß und Kalt and Basica® direct are not suitable for children younger than 12 years. For children older than 12 the daily dose can be the same as for adults. Is sodium a sensible component of base mixtures? The basic effect of so-called basic vital substances like, for example, sodium citrate is due primarily to the citrate component. In comparison, there are neutral, inorganic sodium compounds that cannot neutralize acids. One of them is table salt (sodium chloride) which can put a strain on the kidneys and is also associated with the development of high blood pressure when consumed in large quantities. Therefore organic basic sodium salts like sodium citrate are sensible components of base mixtures. The Basica® products do not contain any sodium chloride and do not affect blood pressure. What is the advantage of milk sugar in Basica® Vital?Milk sugar (lactose) serves as a carrier for the minerals and trace elements in Basica® Vital and it has a positive effect on the absorption of minerals from the intestine. Milk sugar also promotes digestion and improves the intestinal flora. Do the Basica® products contain gluten? All Basica® products are 100% free of gluten and can therefore also be used by patients with celiac disease (wheat gluten intolerance). What is the difference between Basica® Vital and Basica® Sport?Basica® Vital granular powder contains a balanced mixture of vital base substances and is composed according to the latest knowledge of dietetics. The organism requires these vital base substances to excrete acids, which are being constantly formed in our body. Basica® Vital serves to maintain a balanced acid-base equilibrium. Basica® Sport was developed especially for endurance athletes. To maintain the bodily functions and physical capacity, the substances lost by athletes (e.g. via sweating) due to increased metabolic activity (minerals, trace elements, vitamins, energy carriers) must be replaced as quickly as possible in order to avoid exceptional overacidification. In addition to minerals (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium) and trace elements (iron, zinc, copper, molybdenum, chromium, selenium), Basica® Sport therefore also contains the carbohydrates sucrose and maltodextrin for an optimal supply of energy as well as vitamin C and B2. When dissolved in water, a hypotonic sport drink results, which ensures a rapid and effective fluid balancing. Why is it reasonable to take bases to prevent the bone health? An unbalanced diet often lacks base-formers like fruit and vegetables. In the long term, this can lead to the organism having to rely on the body’s base depot, the bones, to maintain the acid-base balance. To compensate for the overacidification, basic minerals like calcium are released from the bone. If this condition persists for some time, the physiological balance between the formation and destruction of bone shifts. In other words, the bone substance is increasingly broken down and the bones become more rapidly porous and fragile. A balanced diet with a high proportion of base-formers therefore promotes the long-term health of bones. Does Basica® help combat cellulite? The connective tissue of a chronically over acidified organism serves to store surplus acids that cannot be excreted. However, this reduces its capacity to bind water and the elasticity decreases. This effect is partly responsible for the development of cellulite. A diet rich in bases combined with other measures to clean out the body (e.g. sauna) can therefore exert a favourable effect on the skin status . How can one determine the acid-base status? For the sake of simplicity, the urine pH is often used to measure the acid-base status. However, due to the physiologically normal range of fluctuation between pH 5 and 8, single measurements are not suitable for drawing a conclusion about the current acid-base balance. Furthermore most of the acid is excreted in bound form and not as free acid. Hereyou find different methods of measurement how you can determine an acidosis Why do foods like, for example, lemons taste sour but have a basic effect in our body? The reason is quite simple: As the sensory nerves on our tongue only recognise acids and not alkali, we are simply not able to sense alkali. Fruits with sour taste such as citrons are abundantly stuffed with bases like organically bound minerals which we do not sense but which are responsible for the alkaline effect in our bodies. With the consumption of fruits the additionally contained fruity acids such as citric acid, dominate our taste. As these organic acids are entirely decomposed in metabolism, they do not burden acid-base balance. Is a 100% balancing of excess acid sensible? So far no official recommendations to stabilize acid-base-balance are available. Our usual diet provides a daily acid load of about 50 - 80 meq. A 100% neutralization of acid is not necessary since acid load strongly varies individually with nutrition, age, metabolic state and physical activity. Therefore it is sensible to adjust the dosage of base supplements to the current life style and nutrition. Our acid-base calculator will help you!
